I allude you to the great Bikol epic hero, Handiong, who fought many monsters and wild creatures. He also introduced laws, inventions and practices in the whole of Ibalon making it a better place to live in.

Like, Handiong, you defeated many doubts, fears and challenges and produced innovative ideas through research. I am certain that you are living up to the UNC motto, Non Scholae Sed Vitae. This milestone is not only for your personal or professional growth and development but this is also for your respective families and communities.

You have the makings of a hero within you. As you move forward to life, I pray that you refine that heroism lurking in your hearts. Always bring the strength of excellence, the sword of integrity, the weapon of dynamism, and the light of care and nurturance for self and others. These manifestations of UNC core values will lead you to break boundaries and create possibilities.

Stand like a lighthouse which serves as a guide to other voyagers. We have equipped you with the expertise that can lead to heroic acts. Use your light to inspire others especially in difficult times.

You are graduates of 2020, a very challenging year. Be the hero like Handiong, help and save others in your own ways. Be the guide like the Lighthouse, be the leader of the Bicol voyagers. This is your purpose, your share to humanity.

The Lighthouse

Since time immemorial, a lighthouse serves as a brilliant beacon for sea travelers and seafarers, an iconic welcome to those arriving. For voyagers out at sea, engulfed in darkness, blanketed by cold, a lighthouse is a sentinel of hope and a pillar of strength. Equally romantic and scenic, it is a sight to behold.

Beaming over the stormy seas, a lighthouse offers safety, stability and security. It symbolizes moving forward and finding our way to the safe harbor, amid adversity and through the challenging and changing time. As a shining portal, it represents guidance in navigating through waters, whatever the treacherous tides and the journey mean.

Steady and mighty, tall and towering, a lighthouse embodies the lofty ideals and nobility of mankind. It is a metaphor for the human spirit, kindling light in the darkness, reaching from the earth to the heavens.

Students are like sailors, they are on a journey. Learners are like explorers sailing towards a destination. The path to education and the learning process may be rough and tough, but teachers make the positive difference. The teachers do to the students, what the lighthouse does to the voyagers – guide and guard them to find their way, their voice and their place in the world.

Like a lighthouse, the teachers pass on light and knowledge, rendering selfless service through the generations. Sacrifices are costly to keep the lighthouse fire ablaze. Teachers are lighthouse, for all the beautiful attributes and ideals it stands for. All institutions here and abroad who edify adult and lifelong learners will be a lighthouse of humanity; the beacon of ages. And we know full well that the main and mighty source of our light is God Almighty.
